Cinnamon in Coffee: Benefits and How To

Coffee is warm and robust. Cinnamon is warm and robust. It just makes sense. If you haven’t tried this little coffee hack yet, what are you waiting for? PS – It’s not just for autumn.

1. Smoother flavor

Adding cinnamon to coffee balances out the later’s signature bitterness and acidity. The warm, slightly spicy flavor of cinnamon brings out a sweet undertone in most coffee blends—you may even think someone has snuck a pinch of sugar into your mug.

Add just a little bit of cream and the creamy texture creating a smooth dessert beverage.

2. Health benefits

Cinnamon is naturally rich in antioxidants, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatories. Adults are advised to consume no more than 1 teaspoon per day, which is perfect for a cup of coffee or two.

Studies have also confirmed that 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can help reduce triglycerides, bad cholesterol, and blood sugar in people with metabolic disease.

3. Metabolism boost

Cinnamon can boost your metabolism, which improves energy levels and helps with weight loss. It has thermogenic properties, which means it can increase your body’s heat production ever so slightly to help burn calories.

How to add cinnamon to coffee

There’s no wrong way to add cinnamon to your coffee. You do you. Find some recipes (see below) or just start experimenting.

The easiest way to incorporate cinnamon in coffee is by adding 1-2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon to every 10 tablespoons of ground coffee before brewing. This allows the cinnamon to infuse directly into the coffee as it brews. Just make sure you mix the cinnamon with the coffee grounds to avoid clumping. (And don’t try it in your espresso machine—it turns to sludge.)

Other ways to add cinnamon to coffee:

  • Cinnamon sticks: Place a whole cinnamon stick in your mug or coffee pot while brewing. The stick will infuse a gentle cinnamon flavor into the coffee.
  • Cinnamon syrup: Make a simple syrup by dissolving equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat. Add cinnamon sticks and letting the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove the sticks and let the syrup cool.
  • Sprinkle it in your mug. If you forgot to mix it with the grounds before brewing, you can sprinkle it directly into your cup, but go slow and stir constantly. Cinnamon really does like to clump.
